I got back last week from my annual trek to Deep Creek, Maryland, for a writers’ retreat with my good friend P.J. O’Dwyer who hosted the event. Great weekend. Plentiful dose of writers’ buzz to motivate me for a good long while. Lest it seem like all I did was absorb wonderful writer energy from talking all things literary, I did manage to teach a class–“Fixing the Broken Story: From Troubleshooting to Repair.” The class consisted of breaking down the story into various categories–the sentence level, the scene level, the chapter level, and the plot level–troubleshooting problems writers encounter, and repairing what ails the piece. I will be developing this into an online class early next year, so stay tuned!
